Do Japanese expect a lot from foreigners?
I read that Japanese women are supposed to act 'feminine'. But. Im not that feminine. I wear a lot of jeans shorts t-shirts tank tops and sweat shirts. I don't wear skirts or dresses but I do wear yukatas and kimonos.
Women everywhere are expected to act feminine (however that is defined in each culture). That's part of being a woman anywhere. Whether or not you act that way is your choice. Wearing kimono and yukata do not necessarily make you feminine, since you could choose to wear them in a more masculine style if you wished. Despite what the first post said, lots of Japanese women of all ages wear kimono and yukata, especially during the summer at summer festivals.
Japanese don't expect foreigners to know or conform to their social standards, though of course it's appreciated if you at least make an effort and being able to follow Japanese manners and such goes a long way towards smoothing social relations. If you're going to Japan as a tourist, I think your overall attitude and your willingness to make an effort to follow Japanese manners and not be an obnoxious nuisance will go a lot farther and be more important than whether or not you're "feminine" or wearing the latest styles. If you're going to live and work in Japan you might want to put some effort into having a slightly more stylish wardrobe (at least for the office) but I think you should still be true to yourself and not try to be "feminine" because you think that's what the Japanese expect of you.
