What do I need to know about breastfeeding? read on...?
Before I try again this time, is there anything I need to know. The first time I was in shock when my boobs turned to giant painful melons, and had to buy nursing pads and a new bra- had no idea. I also had a manual pump that didn't seem to do anything at all. So, assuming it works out this time around...
does the average person get any special bottles- liners- do people really use manual pumps?
can you feed the baby and do other things (that require moving around)?
Can you eat whatever foods, wine, over the counter meds?
anything else I need to know?

The manual pumps are only good for once in a while. If you are going back to work, I recommend purchasing an electric pump or renting one from your hospital (mine charged $1/day).
I used the Playtex drop in bottles because there's less cleaning involved and you can get all the air out. I liked the pre-formed ones. The soft ones are flimsy and rip.
I was able to feed her and walk around the house if necessary, but preferred to keep it to a quiet bonding time for the two of us (at least for the first month or two). That only lasted a few months anyhow because she was so darn tall my arm wasn't long enough to hold her up!
You can eat most foods-stay away from onion, broccoli, and garlic in large amounts, as they can give your baby gas. If your baby seems fussy, it may be something you ate recently. As for alcohol, if it's just one glass of wine, yes-do it right after a feeding so your body has time to metabolize it out of your system before the next one (but the first few weeks you will be too tired to drink it anyways.)
As for medications-there are some that are NOT safe, but these are ones that I took during breastfeeding (all approved by the doctor and pharmacist)
Darvocet
Percoset
Advil
Tylenol
Robitussin
Tylenol Cold and Sinus/Allergy Sinus
Benadryl
Most medications are safe to take-it isn't nearly as limited as pregnancy. If you have any questions you can call your doctor, pediatrician, or pharmacist.
As for general information-stock up on nursing bras, nursing pads, and nipple cream. My nipples started to hurt after about 5 days, and it continued to the end of week two. It will hurt like hell, but I promise you it does pass. After nursing, do NOT remove your baby's mouth from your breast without first releasing the suction. Gently pry your pinkie in between your nipple and her lips. Then take him or her off. Before covering up again (this is just until your nipples toughen) leave them uncovered to air dry. This will help prevent cracking and bleeding (yes I cracked and bled, but it didn't last long) Once they have dried apply the Lanisoh Nursing Cream. It really works wonders. Other than that, just remember to relax. Ideally it should be a pleasant bonding experience for both you and your baby.
