Why do they make pregnancy/maternity nursing tops?
I was looking at Old Navy's new line of nursing tops and they are for pregnant women. What I don't understand is WHY they would do such a thing? It's not like you'll still be pregnant when your nursing. I see no reason to make top with an opening for your breasts to nurse, if you don't even have a baby to nurse until you aren't pregnant anymore. And frankly, after my son was born, it didn't take all that long for my stomach to go back down and I no longer needed the flouncey pregnancy tops anymore.
In my case, these shirts might work out nicely because I'm still nursing my son and pregnant again. But, for most women, that is not the case. Why is this? Can someone please explain?
Because no one in the maternity fashion industry (if you can even call it that) is pregnant. Nor has ever asked a pregnant woman what is considered practical and what isn't.
I'm convinced the fashion world is made up entirely of tall people (obviously). When looking for petite maternity pants, I had a horrible time and was told by the salesperson "It's easier to shorten pants than to add length." Well, no sh!t. Had I been thinking sanely that day, though, I would have told her, "Yes, but if the crotch length is still too long and hangs between your knees like an Oompa Loompa, it doesn't matter how freaking short your pants are!" *sigh*
I also look at some of the shirts out there on the racks and wonder who suddenly decided it was a good idea to start channeling 1983 again - what's with the huge horizontal stripes making a comeback? Half the stuff out there looks like the baby has already been born and puked all over you. Oh well, only 10 more weeks and I can finally be done with deciding on what pair of sweatpants and pants that won't stay up to wear every day. LOL
ETA: I understand that not every woman feels comfortable wearing regular tops again soon after birth. But I think, given our culture's whacked views on tandem nursing and nursing 'older' children in general, I'd say the top's design is just a happy coincidence! Oh well.
