Black Bridesmaid Dresses: Appropriate or Not?
Black is not a traditional color thought to be reserved for happy occasions. In fact, black is often a color that resembles sadness or morning. Therefore, many are uneasy about seeing or wearing black to a wedding. For years, the color has been reserved for funerals. However, more and more brides are deciding that black is the perfect color choice for their bridesmaid dresses. Once one can overcome the gloomy repertoire that is given to the color, black bridesmaid dresses are actually not a bad choice.
Black is actually a popular color for other occasions. Very formal dinners often call for a black coat and tie. Men are seen as being formally dressed in black tuxedos. So why is it that black cannot do the same for a bridesmaid dress?
Black clothing flatters nearly every physique. It is a slimming color that can make a body look trimmer and leaner. It is a very formal and sophisticated color. Many males consider black to be a very sexy color on women. In addition, black can actually add a touch of elegance or seriousness to your wedding ceremony. While brighter, showy colors can lead way to a less formal atmosphere. In addition, black dresses never go out of style. Your bridesmaids will be able to reuse and wear this dress to other formal gatherings and occasions.
Black bridesmaid dresses work very well in complimenting an evening wedding. They are perfect for cooler months when a darker color is often desired. Yet strapless little black dresses also work well in the summer and flowing black dresses are appropriate for the spring.
While it seems that black may be the universal color, be prepared to hear many opposing comments to the color choice. Older wedding guests may even be shocked at the choice in dresses. Some common comments heard relate to black to being morbid or depressing. These comments are all related to the stereotype and are uncertainly not true. That is of course if too many black details are not added, such as black flowers and candles.
If you feel that all black may be just a little too much, consider black dresses with detailing using different materials or colors. Beading or sequins may add a nice touch. Even a black patterned material is workable to break the black monotony of the fabric. Choosing a black dress with contrasting white ribbon or sash can soften the color also. It is now even acceptable for bridesmaids to wear different color dresses. However, mixing other colors with black may take away from the evening elegance of a night wedding.
Choosing black bridesmaid dresses is not a horrific idea. In fact, it is now thought to be a very updated and twenty-first century idea. Black looks very elegant in person and in your wedding ceremony pictures too!
