Yes Virginia There Is Maternity Leave Insurance
Maternity leave insurance really does exist. But women often don't think ahead to their maternity leave when they are planning a pregnancy. Plus, the awareness that a solution exists is very low, and many miss out on a golden opportunity. Perhaps this article will help some people enjoy maternity leave pay.
Maternity leave implies time away from work to deliver your baby, recover from the delivery, and spend time bonding with baby. Sometimes it also means missing additional time before delivery for bed rest, and extra time after the delivery if recovery takes longer than expected due to complications in delivery. This time away from work is often unpaid, putting unneeded financial stress on a family. This stress can't be good for mom or her baby.
Maternity leave insurance replaces a portion of mom's income during the time she misses work. It's the only time you can buy insurance that covers a planned event: normal labor and delivery. But most don't – why?
There are several reasons why women don't buy maternity leave insurance at the right time.
Apply Before Getting Pregnant
Many women don't plan far enough ahead. There are plenty of articles describing important things to do before getting pregnant. Most of these articles focus prenatal health issues, rather than finances impacting delivery and beyond. Women planning pregnancies must purchase this coverage before getting pregnant. Once already pregnant it's too late.
Look for the Right Insurance Policy Name
Maternity leave insurance goes by other names: short term disability and hospital indemnity insurance. Insurance companies provide important coverage, but don't necessarily promote the pregnancy and maternity components of the coverage. Women planning pregnancies are in a position to gain far more back in benefit than they pay in premium. This represents a big loss for insurance carriers, so they keep key coverage elements a well guarded secret.
Ask Your Employer to Expand Benefits at No Direct Cost
These policies are not sold direct to individuals. Insurers market policies with pregnancy and maternity coverage only through employer groups in order to pool risks and stay in business. The policies are sold as voluntary employee benefits. Employees (women planning pregnancies) can pay 100% of the premium by payroll deduction. There is no direct cost to the employer to make these insurance options available to all employees. If not already available at work, women should ask their employer to contact a voluntary supplemental insurance carrier so they can take advantage.
Short term disability insurance replaces up to two-thirds of income, and pays a six week benefit for vaginal delivery, and an eight week benefit for c-section delivery. Time missed from work due to pregnancy complications, postpartum disorders, accidents and illnesses are also covered. Hospital indemnity insurance covers mom's hospital stay for normal delivery, and pays an additional benefit if her baby requires special care for medical reasons.
